Top 5 Most Important STEM Fields

Right now the world is in chaos. Zombies are outnumbering humans 10 to 1. You and your team are bunkering down discussing the future of humanity. We all know eventually the dust will settle, and the zombies will disintegrate. When this happens you will need to rebuild a society for future generations. This will be when the STEM fields come in handy. STEM is an umbrella term for all studies that fall under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics disciplines. All are helpful in there own way to society as a whole, but I feel these five will give your team the upper hand in restoring normalcy in the zombie-torn landscape. So, what will be the Top 5 Most Important STEM Fields?

5. Computer Science

Computer Science

Computers currently pay a major in our modern society. They operate our factories, run our inventory systems, basically every profession in the world at some point works with a computer. They are also the first to go down in any major crisis. When the computers go down life as we know it will cease. This is why getting the computer system up and running should be on the top of your priorities. Once they are phones will begin working, gas pumps will start functioning, and stores can resume function.

4. Engineering Technology

Engineering Technology

Engineering is the most studied of all the STEM Fields. They are also very valuable to society. They face a multitude of problems that require a lot of logical thinking and critical analysis skills. Engineers contribute a lot to the society by building bridges, design new products, and set up new treatment facilities. They are the middle people between scientific discoveries and commercial applications. Engineers will be one of the most valuable people in the rebuilding of societies because of there wide knowledge of skills. You can even develop skills in a specialized form of engineering like chemical, mechanical, and environmental.

3. Mathematical Science

Mathematical Science

They are the ones who study in all disciplines where mathematical applications are present. Yes, even in a zombie apocalypse you’ll need to use math. Since I can already hear you groaning the most popular question utter in any middle school math classroom let me tell you. You will need it to figure out how much volume of water you can fit in a container to ensure proper rationing. You’ll need to maintain your inventory of goods to make sure everyone gets a fair cut of the goods. You’ll also need it to calculate how far away a herd of zombies is from you. These all require math.

2. Chemistry

This is the study of all aspects involving matter. Chemistry is an important aspect in all of our lives whether we are a chemist or not. Everything, including our bodies, is made up of matter. It is divided into five branches; Analytical Chemists are responsible for studying the physical and chemical properties of a substance. Physical Chemist is a combination of physics and chemistry. They study how matter interacts. Inorganic Chemist study matter that does not have carbon in their general make up. The two most important fields will be Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. Organic Chemistry is known as the “Chemistry of Life”. They study all things that are made up of carbon. They will be responsible for ensuring the needs of humans are met.

1. Biology

This was a tough decision because finding a cure is important, but not as important as staying alive. Without humans, the zombies win. Biologists study all living things from the cell to the giraffes to honey fungus. Like other fields of study, this too is broken into subcategories such; Marine Biology (the study of marine life), Cell Biology (the study of cells) and Botany (the study of plants) just to name a few. The most important fields you should focus on is Biophysics and Biochemistry. These two studies will be the most helpful to your team. A Biophysicist studies the application of the laws of physics to biological phenomena. They will be the ones responsible for studying zombies and find out what is causing you. The Biochemist studies the aspects concerned with the chemical and physicochemical processes and substances. They will be the ones on the front lines of cure development. Once a cure is found then zombie bites will be ineffective and the virus will die from lack of new hosts.

M.L. Lewis is not new to the world of writing. She has written various short stories and poems throughout the years and has won multiple awards in art and literature. The highest honor she received was Poet of the Year in 2000, and again in 2005. A poem she wrote in honor of law enforcement can be seen in the book, Everything You Wanted to Know about the Heroes in Blue. She was also featured in Encounter magazine for the volunteer work she did for the United States troops. In 2010 she won Resident of the Year in a local newspaper titled The South Hills Messanger. Today, she spends her time increasing her knowledge on disaster preparedness while working on her Ph. D. in Paranormal Studies.
