Mid Season Premiere Squeezes Out Suspense

Spoiler alerts ahead. Readers’ discretion is advised.

The long-awaited Mid-Season ten premiere was tonight, and it was far from boring. We begin amid the horde where we left off last year. It didn’t take them long to realize this was a trap design by Alpha to lure them to there deaths. At first, they tried to climb out, but this plan didn’t last long. After this Daryl looks around the cave for an alternative exit. Here he spots a small water flow. Determining that the water is coming from the outside they decide to make their way towards it. Aaron sees a series of rocks they can use to jump one by one over to the water. Once everyone is across, and out of the immediate danger of the horde, Daryl goes on ahead to find a path leading out. While they wait Magna confronts Carol about getting them stuck there in the first place. The episode then cuts to The Whisperers eating lunch when Alpha rushes into camp. She pulls Beta and Gamma aside to have a private meeting. She informs them that the other side has been spying on them because they knew exactly where the herd was. Alpha then orders Gamma to tell the increased security on the border and to inform the other they have failed. She does, but not before Negan notices she has some suspicious, guilty behavior.

Meanwhile, back in the cave, the group is resting, unsure where to go next. Magna becomes increasingly restless. She takes Daryl’s matches to continue foraging head. While she does that, Carol decides to talk to Daryl. Daryl is upset with her over her reckless behavior. Carol confesses that she doesn’t want to kill Alpha, she wants to make her suffer for the pain she caused. Daryl is sympathetic to this but pleads with her to stop before more people get hurt. Carol apologizes for her behavior. Daryl doesn’t believe her and demands she promise him that she’ll truly stop. during this Magna continues her search for the exit. She thinks she found a way when she is jumped by multiple Whisperers they now call Skins. After rescuing her, they try to find out where they came from to find the escape. Jerry finds an arrow, and they decide this must lead somewhere.

While they follow the arrows Negan confronts Alpha about her spy problem while she is going to the bathroom. Negan suggests that based on his personal experiences as a leader the spy is often the person closest to them. Alpha swear her people are loyal. Negan said he once had people too he thought were loyal, but they weren’t after all. He says he believes the spy must be Gamma because she is close enough to Alpha that she would know where the horde is, but also vulnerable enough to flip since she is one of the border guards. Alpha becomes upset with his theory. She threatens him that if he doesn’t stop spreading paranoia then she is going to remove his favorite body part.

We return to the cave as Daryl follows The Whisperers’ tracks into a very narrow tunnel. They are almost out when Carol’s claustrophobia gets the best of her. Daryl talks her out of it as Jerry, who is the rear, hears a noise behind him. He winds up his flashlight and turns to see two walkers climbing towards them. Being so tall he starts to struggle climbing in the tiny tunnel as it gets smaller and smaller. He is near the end when he gets stuck. He yells for them to go to safety, but they refuse. They then band together and pull him out with the walkers chewing on the heel of his boot. Magna sees the way out. She starts heading for it but is grabbed by Daryl just before she walks off into a ravine where the rest of Alpha’s horde lies. Somehow they get across and break into an old mine shaft. the follow it until they reach the end of the line, which is blocked off.

Back at the Whisperer’s camp Alpha asks Beta if he has seen Gamma. He said no because she never made it to the border. He fears the other side may have kidnapped her. Alpha instead believes Negan’s theory that she was a spy this whole time. She orders Beta to bring Gamma to her, alive.

Back at the shaft, they are all working as a team trying to dig there way out. While working Aaron confronts Magna about her attitude. She confesses she didn’t leave home on the best terms with her girlfriend Yumiko. As they work Kellie finds a crate full of old dynamite. She purposes they use it to speed up the process. Jerry says it is unsafe, and to put it back.

As they work Alpha pulls Negan aside from the others. She orders when to walk to a secluded part of the forest. When they arrive she instructs him to strip naked with his back to her. He is unsure what is going on but does what he is told. When told to turn around he does. To his surprise he sees Alpha standing there also naked. She says to him that she is rewarding his for his information about Gamma being a spy by having sex with him.

While she rewards him for a job well done, the heroes are halfway out of the mine shaft. Daryl turns to check on Carol and notices her and a stick of dynamite is missing. Quickly realizing where she is, he runs after her. Carol is climbing down the ravine, looking for a good spot to take out the horde below. Right before she lights the dynamite she loses her footing. She struggles to regain her grip on the rock face when Daryl shows up just in time. He pulls her up and scolds her. Realizing Daryl is right she grabs the stick of dynamite but drops it instead. It explodes as it hits the rocky floor below. This causes the shaft to begin to collapse. Aaron and Kellie make it out of the shaft as Jerry struggles to hold up the frame. Connie runs back in to get Daryl and Carol with Magna, but they begin to get swarm by Whisperers. Those who made it out are also having to deal with there own gang of Skins. Daryl helps Carol out, but Jerry loses his grip on the frame. As soon as he drops it he barely gets out in time as the rest of the dynamite explodes trapping Connie and Magna inside the shaft. Unsure if alive or dead, Daryl begins digging in the rubble for them. Aaron tells him one person can’t do this alone as Kellie pleads with the others to go. Daryl attempts to storm off but is stopped by Carol. Carol pleads with him to forgive her for possibly killing Connie and Magna. Daryl pushes her off of him. He tells Aaron to report the horde to the others, while he looks for another way into the mines to find them. Well, do you think Connie and Magna are alive? Hopefully, we learn the answer next week.
