As a nurse and prepper, I can tell you the best thing you could ever do for yourself and your family unit is to get back to nature. No, I don’t mean grab a bongo and start sporting tie-dye shirts. Think of your health and well-being as the tool you will need to survive. Weapons and security are very important too, but won’t do dick for you if you can’t move or function due to illness. Today’s medical world has done just the opposite of what it should. It has allowed the public to have more say over their doctors, as to whether or not an antibiotic is needed for whatever ails them. Because of this, doctors have now over-prescribed antibiotics so much, that “super bugs” have emerged, ready to kick our ass. “Penicillin? Ha ha ha! Try again!” -Superbug.
So, back to grassroots. Here’s some tips..
(and please bear in mind, these are things to do NOW, not when the shit hits the fan)
– Water. Proper daily hydration will keep you more mentally alert, less physically fatigued, and able to rid your body of toxins easier. Water is the only fluid we need to survive (unless you are infant). Everything else is just a sugar, caffeine or alcohol-laden guilty pleasures. Moderation is fine, however. Studies suggest that 2 alcohol or caffeinated drinks a day is actually GOOD for your immune system. 😀 (Please note, that chemically treated water is best when you are unable to drink filtered or pure, natural-source water.)
– Nutrition. Once again, our society is killing itself with so-called sustenance that is fast, processed, toxic and non-nutritive while markets sit with fresh fruits, vegetables and meat literally rotting on the shelves. Try your hand at container gardening, if you never have, and see what wonderful things happen. As a bonus, you will end up with experience to carry with you if disaster strikes. Keep seeds in an air-tight container in the refrigerator to keep for such a day. Ok, back on track….Whole foods, simple, in an uncooked state prior to purchase (whether fresh or frozen), meats untainted by unnecessary antibiotics and steroids, nuts, grains, fruits and vegetables that are pesticide free….all of these things can keep you and your immune system healthy and able to ward off common ailments. It also decreases your chances of developing certain cancers.
-Exercise. This doesn’t have to be elaborate and you sure as hell don’t have to pay for it. When we (and by “we” I assume most of us on here are adults) were kids, we played tag, ran, played kick-ball, got on the monkey-bars, etc. We were happy and energetic. By high school, unless you were playing in a team sport, gym class was a joke. 45 minutes of standing-around volleyball…woo hoo! No wonder by college we were exhausted and had less endurance than before. “We’re going to live forever!” is the mentality, only to find later on in life, if you could go back and kick that person in the ass, you would.
Fix it NOW! We don’t know if zombies are truly slow or if the will be runners. I’m not going to chance it. Any hoo….the point is do it. (screw you Nike, I’m not stealing your slogan!) New stuff is always more fun to try. Kayaking, frisbee golf, circuit training. You get it. Paintball or Airsoft! Great for exercise, target training and and tactics! Who wouldn’t want to run around, hide, wear camo and shoot shit, right? Ok next topic..
-Rest. Most of us don’t get anywhere near enough. I’m guilty of it. I like to relax at the end of my day, watch some TV after household chores are done, but I stay up way longer than I should. A hot bath or shower followed by some good stretching usually helps. TV is the devil, to much good stuff on there, but nothing you can’t DVR or pull up on your PC either. Another thing about rest, is that it helps your brain and organs to work at optimal levels, since you are using less energy to move your muscles around. Cool the house down, darken the room as best as you can, run a fan for air movement and the ambient “white noise” it produces. (I can’t sleep well at all without those last two things). The better your sleep quality, the better your health and mental state will be.
-Stressors. We all have them, we can’t avoid them so the best thing to do is tackle them. (No, not your boss, although that would be fuckin awesome!) But the way we deal and cope with them. The negative effect they have is absolutely detrimental to our health, and mainly in the WAY we cope (excess alcohol, comfort foods). We let it weigh on us like boulders. Solution? Don’t let it. No matter how bad it seems, don’t let it get the best of you, because YOU are the most important part of any equation! Everything you want to do, need to do…you won’t be able to do if you’re sick from stress. I’m not going to keep going on this, as there are many ways to eliminate stress, or at least make it manageable. Just try the above 3 topics in this article first. That might just make the difference.
You can’t prevent disaster…but you can make your health, body and mind damn well ready for it!
